The Santa Claus Parade

Every year in St. George, Bermuda they hold a Santa Claus Parade to welcome in the holiday season.  Last year I met a lovely woman, Carla Watson, who is the founder and director of the St. George’s Original Dancerettes majorette group.  The Dancerettes are a nontraditional majorette group made up of 35 young ladies ages 3-30 who perform to all types of music instead of a drum squad.  They carry batons or a prop of their choice and the senior girls twirl fire!  They practice twice a week at the St. George’s Community Centre.

The thing that impressed me the most about this group is their motto:  dare to be different; an original is always worth more than a copy!  These young ladies are combining their love of music and dance to provide a positive contribution to their community.

2011 marks the 20th anniversay of the Dancerettes, to be celebrated at the Heritage Day Parade.  Hats off to these young ladies for using their time and talents to accomplish something positive!

Make Them Laugh!

I’m just one bad relationship away from having 30 cats!  And if I didn’t have allergies and asthma, I probably would!  Ladies, and Gentleman, I’m sure many of us have had this attitude entering back into the dating circus after years of being in a long-term relationship.  I think that’s one reason I love Ephemera’s sassy dish towels; they have attitude and spunk!  They seem to know just how to say what you were thinking without you actualy having to be politically incorrect!  And I don’t know about you, but I like a little sas while I’m drying my dishes.  Sometimes humor makes life’s little chores more tolerable when you can laugh about them.  So have a little fun cleaning, unless of course you have money to pay someone else to clean for you!  Then you really do get the last laugh!  Happy birthday, Lucy!

Totseat – The portable, washable highchair

My best friend from England came for a visit with my 15 month old Godson.  I went to set up for lunch and asked her if she needed a booster for the baby.  She said, no, I brought a highchair!  I did the Scooby Doo, huh, because I didn’t see any furniture.  Did she have a furniture shrinking and growing device cleverly hidden in her purse?  No, she had the coolest invention I’ve seen in years, the totseat portable highchair.  It’s a cloth, washable seat sling with an adjustable cumberbund type restraint that fits onto any type chair and functions as a highchair!  Brillant!  It is designed for children 8-30 months that can sit up by themselves.  My Godson loved it!  He didn’t squirm, but sat in the totseat, eating all the food off his plate like a big boy!  The totseat is portable, washable, squashable and safe!  And what a great alternative to lugging around furniture or having to buy multiple conventional highchairs for your house, the babysitter’s house and grandma’s house.  Parents are working harder than ever to provide for their children.  I commend totseat on their innovative product for children.  Pack that baby up and let’s go…..with the portable, washable highchair, totseat!  Thanks to makers of this totseat video, showing us how easy it is to use this awesome product!

Think Pink

I think it is safe to say that most of us have had a friend or family member affected by breast cancer.  With the innovation of the mammogram and genetic marker testing, early detection has increased survival rate dramatically.  But the sad truth is that too many people suffer because of this disease and we need to find a cure.

In 1982, Nancy G. Brinker started the Susan G. Komen Foundation in memory of her sister, who lost her battle with breast cancer.  Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is the result of one sister promising  another to do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.  In fact, the pink ribbon, which has become a symbol for breast cancer awaremness, was first introduced in 1991 during a New York City race for breast cancer survivors.  One person can make a difference or lead others to make a difference.

Many companies, agencies, groups and individuals have given of their time, efforts and monies to aid in breast cancer research.  One company, Manual Woodworkers and Weavers, in hopes of someday finding a cure, dedicates a portion of the wholesale cost of several of their products to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.  Set in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Maual makes a variety of products all geared to help support breast cancer research.  Their hope is that with the public’s help and support, they will make a difference in the lives of so many women.

Use your talents, whatever they may be, an pay it forward.  You are never too young or too old to make a difference.  Ladies, take care of yourselves.  Get your annual mammogram and do your monthly check; squishing the girls may not be pleasant, but it could save your life.
